Elon Musk says X to have two new premium tiers

 


Elon Musk has announced that his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, will launch two premium subscription tiers.


"One is cheaper with all the features but no ads, the other is more expensive but no ads," the billionaire said in a post on X.


It comes as the company began charging new users $1 in New Zealand and the Philippines to use the platform.


Mr Musk did not elaborate on the plans.


New users who unsubscribe from reading posts; The company said on its website that it will only be able to perform "read-only" functions, such as watching videos and following accounts.


Mr Musk has long said his solution to weeding out fake accounts and bots on the social media platform is a fee for service.


Since taking over the company in October last year, he has tried to entice users to pay for an upgraded service, now called X Premium, and lure advertisers back to X with a discount.


Some users now choose to pay $8 per month for the blue check subscription service.


Its "Not A Bot" registration method is spam, It aims to reduce platform manipulation and bot activity.


Mr Musk's swift changes, including mass layoffs and the disbanding of content moderation teams, have seen advertisers stop advertising on the service.


The platform acknowledged the impact on revenue and blamed activists for putting pressure on advertisers.
